UC Davis Blum Center Reaches New Heights with Blum Summer Fellowship

In 2011, the Blum Center for Developing Economies at UC Davis initiated a new program to support promising undergraduate students who design and undertake poverty-alleviating projects abroad.  Last year, all six undergraduate colleges/divisions at UC Davis agreed to collaborate in supporting and co-financing the Blum Center Summer Fellows Program (AKA the Poverty Alleviation Through Action (PATA) grants program).  As a result of this collaboration, the Blum Center was able to support 24 undergraduate students last summer.

Blum Center Launches the First UC-Wide Global Poverty Action Day

On the 19th of April, the Blum Center hosted the campus and local community for a screening of the documentary Poverty Inc. This event was held in tandem with the eight other UC campuses as part of a UC system wide initiative - Global Poverty Action Days - which was the first of its kind, and is expected to occur every year.

Introducing the 2017 Blum PATA Summer Fellows

The Blum Center is pleased to announce its newest cohort of Poverty Alleviation through Action (PATA) Summer Fellows! This summer, the Center will be sending 26 undergraduate students to tackle issues in poverty and inequality in 14 countries, including the US, on four continents.

Blum Center Director Speaks on the Future of Water in Chile

On March 29th, Blum Center Director Tu Jarvis presented on the future of water regulation at a seminar titled “Future Water Challenges: What Regulation is Required?” held at the Pontifical Catholic University in Chile.  The seminar was hosted by the Catholic University Center on Water Law and Management and brought together environmental and natural resource experts from Chile, Peru, Argentina, and the US to share innovative ideas and solutions to address water scarcity and drought.

We are seeking 4-6 highly qualified interns to join us. *If you have an undergraduate who you believe is uniquely suited to intensive, collaborative field-work in this region, please let us know!

This internship is open to students of all disciplines. Graduating seniors are not eligible.

D-Lab launches a new seminar – Global Poverty: think big, start small

It is well-known that “we learn better by doing”. That is the concept that guides D-Lab courses, through which students obtain knowledge through hands-on experience. As an important asset for the Blum Center, D-Lab engages students in finding solutions to energy issues in developing countries. D-Lab focuses on innovative technologies and business models that can allow people at the “bottom of the pyramid” to save or earn more money.

Blum Center Student Awards: Alleviating Poverty One Project at a Time

Since its beginning in 2011, the Blum Center UC Davis has supported numerous students in the fight against global poverty through its annual poverty alleviation grants programs. Each year, the Blum Center provides funding to highly motivated undergraduate and graduate students for poverty alleviation work abroad through its Poverty Alleviation Through Action (PATA) and Poverty Alleviation through Sustainable Solutions (PASS) grants.
