U.S. Passport Grant Program

Thanks to the generosity of the Sullivan Family Global Affairs Passport Access Support Fund (endowed by Patrick & Cecelia Sullivan Family Foundation), a 2023 IIE American Passport Project Grant, and UC Davis’ Passport Services, the UC Davis Global Learning Hub is launching the U.S. Passport Grant program. In Fall 2023, the program will award 70 passports to UC Davis undergraduate students.

A passport is a tool which empowers you to take global action. Whether a passport helps you study, intern, and/or engage with communities in another country, it grants access to transformative global learning opportunities. 

What does the grant cover?

The U.S. Passport Grant Program covers the cost of one First-Time Adult U.S. Passport Book with standard processing and standard delivery. All costs noted below are covered by this grant.

The total costs of a U.S. Passport Book include: 

Eligibility Requirements

• U.S. citizen
• 18 years of age or older
• Enrolled at UC Davis
• With priority for students who are:  
  • Pell Grant eligible,  
  • applying for a U.S. passport for the first time 

We especially encourage applications from students who identify as part of a community historically marginalized or underrepresented in study abroad participation.

Award Application Process

Submitting Your Application 

The U.S. Passport Grant Program application for the fall 2023 cycle opens on September 25, 2023. The application deadline is November 15, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time. There is limited funding for these awards so we encourage students to apply early. The GLH plans to notify students if they have received the award in early December 2023.

Grant Awardee Requirements

Students who are awarded must attend the Passport Services and Application Information Session in February 2024. At this session UC Davis’ Passport Services will highlight the services of their office and help students complete their DS-11 application form.

Awardees need to be prepared to present required supporting documents during the In-Person Group Application Appointment in February.

Required supporting documents include: 

• DS-11 form 
• Evidence of U.S. Citizenship 
• Photocopy of U.S. Citizenship Evidence 
• Photo ID 
• Photocopy of photo ID 
• 2”x2” photo (Taken at UC Davis’ Passport Services)

Important Note on the “X” Gender Passport Option

Please note that you may select the gender marker you would like printed on your U.S. passport. The gender you select does not need to match the gender on your supporting documentation such as birth certificate or state ID. For more information on selecting a gender marker which does not match that noted on supporting documents or another gender identity (X) please review the U.S. Department of State’s Selecting your Gender Marker website.

Because most countries continue to offer only binary options for identifying sex and the "X" gender option remains unknown to many border control agents and passport screeners, students traveling with an "X" gender option on their passport may encounter issues if their host country does not recognize this option. If you plan to travel with an "X" gender option on your passport, please contact our office so we can advise on next steps based on your host country's recognition of this option and provide other resources such as the U.S. Department of State's travel guidance for members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
